Waterproof outdoor clothing has been reformulated substantially over the past decade. The change affects how garments perform, how they should be cared for and how long the finish lasts.
Two systems do two different jobs
A waterproof garment combines a membrane or coating that blocks liquid water while allowing vapour through, with a surface treatment on the outer fabric.
The surface treatment causes water to bead and run off. Without it the face fabric wets out, which blocks vapour transfer and makes the garment feel clammy even though it is not leaking.
Most complaints about a jacket failing are about the surface treatment rather than the membrane, which is why reproofing often restores performance.
The original chemistry was durable in the wrong way
Early water-repellent finishes used long-chain fluorinated compounds, which performed exceptionally against water and oils and lasted well through washing.
The same molecular stability that made them durable in use made them persistent in the environment, and they were detected far from where they were manufactured or used.
That persistence, rather than any performance problem, drove regulatory pressure and voluntary reformulation across the industry.
Replacements trade performance for degradability
Shorter-chain fluorinated compounds and non-fluorinated alternatives based on silicone, polyurethane or wax chemistry are now widespread.
Non-fluorinated finishes shed water acceptably but resist oils poorly, so body oils, sunscreen and food contamination degrade their performance faster.
They also wear off sooner, which is the practical difference an owner notices: the same garment needs reproofing more frequently than an older one did.
Care routines had to change with the chemistry
Modern finishes are heat-activated, so a garment often regains repellency after tumble drying or ironing on a low setting once it is clean.
Washing matters more than it did, because contamination on the face fabric suppresses repellency. Ordinary detergent leaves residues that make this worse.
Technical washes rinse cleanly and are formulated not to strip the finish, and reproofing products are applied afterwards to restore the surface treatment.
What this means when buying
A garment described as free of intentionally added fluorinated compounds will likely need more frequent maintenance to perform as expected.
Membrane types themselves vary in construction and repairability, and a garment whose face fabric can be reproofed indefinitely will outlast one whose coating cannot be renewed.
Buying for the conditions actually encountered matters more than either choice, since a heavily specified shell used for occasional rain is impact incurred for performance never used.
