Visitors sometimes find sections of a national park deliberately alight, managed by the same agency that closes trails for fire risk elsewhere. The apparent contradiction reflects a change in understanding.

Many ecosystems are shaped by fire

A wide range of forest, grassland and scrub systems evolved with regular fire, and their species carry adaptations to it: thick bark, seed cones that open with heat, and roots that resprout after burning.

In those systems, frequent low-intensity fire clears undergrowth, recycles nutrients and keeps the canopy open, without killing mature trees.

Some species depend on it completely, and their seedlings establish only in the conditions that follow a burn.

Total suppression changed the fuel structure

For much of the last century the standard response was to extinguish every fire as quickly as possible, which was effective and had a cumulative side effect.

Without periodic burning, dead material accumulated on the forest floor and dense young growth filled the space beneath the canopy.

That understorey forms a ladder connecting ground fuel to the crowns. Once the ladder exists, a fire that would previously have stayed low can reach the canopy and become far harder to control.

Prescribed burning rebuilds the missing cycle

Controlled burns are set under specified conditions of humidity, wind, temperature and fuel moisture, with containment lines prepared in advance.

The aim is a low-intensity fire that consumes surface fuel and young growth while leaving mature trees standing, reproducing what regular natural fire once did.

Windows for this work are narrow and shrinking in many regions, because the conditions that make a burn safe are also becoming less frequent.

Some natural fires are now allowed to run

Where a lightning fire starts in a remote area under favourable conditions, agencies may monitor rather than suppress it, letting it perform the ecological function.

The decision depends on proximity to communities and infrastructure, forecast weather, available crews and the state of fuel in the surrounding area.

This is why one fire is fought and another is watched, and the difference is rarely visible from the road.

What it means for a visit

Closures during prescribed burns are short and planned, and smoke can affect air quality and visibility across a wide area for days.

Recently burned ground is not damaged land. Blackened trunks with green regrowth beneath are the expected sequence, and the flush of flowering that follows draws wildlife.

Park information services publish burn plans in advance, so checking them before travelling is more useful than assuming a burn means a park is closed.
